Sestiere  San Polo - Santa Croce

(2) San Pantalon

The church of San Pantalon has never been finished, as far as the outside is concerned. But you must see its roof painted by Gianantonio Fumiani. He spent 24 years of his life painting it (1680-1704).

Incredible !

You will never forget it !

The grave of Giannantinio Fumiani  is located under this ceiling which was the masterpiece of his life.

Painted on canvas with a rare skilfulness, this huge ceiling is a unique example in Venice and maybe in the world.

At first sight this composition may seem a bit confused with its clusters of characters, but if you look closer, everything gets clear and organised.

Indeed, the artist used the architectural structure of the church without breaking its lines, and even extended it in a breathtaking perpective which opens on the skies from which seems to fall all the light flooding the church.

His painting was still inspired by great masters such as Tintoretto and Veronese, but the daring of his composition opened the way to the flights of a Tepolo who brought his personal touch by adding to it the transparency of the light and of the colours.
