The arsenal was designated by the government of the Republic as ‘the heart of the Venitian State’. It was founded in 1104 by the Doge Falier. And it was at that time the biggest shipyard in the world. 

It was surrounded with three kms of red-crenel walls and 16.000 people used to work there.
